One of the largest earthquakes in the Indian Ocean, measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale, occurred on December 26, 2004 and triggered a tsunami that caused damage and killed more than 220,000 people in 14 countries.

99% of the human losses occurred in the province of Aceh, which is located in the west of the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. In a radius of 2–3 km from the coastline, almost everything was washed into the ocean. As a result of the disaster, >80% of the GDP of Aceh and Nias Island was lost.
